Summer Camp Kitchen Manager Head Cook

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wyoming County CAMP WYOMOCO has an opening for a temporary, seasonal, Summer Camp Kitchen Manager/Head Cook for the 2018 season (June 18, 2018 through mid-August 2018).

The Kitchen Manager/Head Cook directs the overall food service operation of the camp, including menu planning, purchasing, inventory control, vendor relations, nutrition, preparation, service, sanitation, security, personnel oversight, customer service, and record keeping.

 

Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Kitchen Manager/Head Cook will be responsible for creating and supervising service of three nutritious quality meals per day and snacks for up to 215 campers and staff within budgetary guidelines. The kitchen manager is also responsible ensuring and maintaining proper sanitation procedures and safe food for the camp community according to state health regulations and standards.

 

The Kitchen Manager/Head Cook will collaborate with Camp Health staff and Camp Management to be aware of food allergies as well as a variety of camper dietary needs such as vegan, Gluten Free, Celiac, Diabetic, vegetarian, etc. to ensure that all campers are receiving balanced, nutritious meals.

 

Physical requirements include bending, lifting, sitting, standing, stooping, stretching, and walking. Hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and a normal range of eye-sight and hearing required to communicate with staff and manipulate camp equipment. Must operate with daily exposure to the cold, heat, rain, sun, and varying other weather conditions, as well as under irregular working hours in a camp environment.

Kitchen and Dining Functions

  • Manage the daily operations of the Camp Wyomoco dining service to provide of three nutritious, quality meals per day and snacks for campers and staff.
  • Oversee and lead the planning, preparation, service and cleanup of meals and snacks.
  • Meet with Camp Manager and/or Assistant Camp Manager on a daily basis to discuss the menu, orders, issues, etc.
  • Rotate food as necessary and adjust menus to avoid food spoilage.
  • Accurately communicate standards and cooking methods to staff, give orders, and speak with campers, staff professionally and clearly.
  • Prepare and post daily menus and task sheets for other kitchen workers.
  • Coordinate and oversee the work of other food service staff. Provide ongoing feedback and guidance to kitchen staff.
  • Promote practices that seek to reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle as much as possible.
  • Work closely with person leading songs/announcements at each meal to coordinate timing of service.
  • Establish and maintain an adequate area for the disposal of trays, silverware, trash, glasses, and recycling, etc.
  • Observes all safety precautions and compiles with all health and safety rules and procedures.
  • Inspect equipment and ensure all equipment in the kitchen is maintained and in good repair. Report issues to Camp Manager, Assistant Camp Manger immediately.
  • Maintain current inventory of all food and related kitchen/dining supplies.
  • Oversee ordering of food, equipment, and kitchen/dining supplies consistent with menus, budget, and head counts as necessary.
  • Interact with vendors to order and/or receive all supplies for the kitchen as necessary.
  • Check-in inventory orders and properly store food.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.
  • Oversee routine maintenance, sanitation, and upkeep of the camp kitchen, its equipment, and facilities.
  • Clean and maintain all food-service areas, including kitchen, dining hall, tables, benches, floors, storage, kitchen recycling.
  • Supervise the daily cleaning of the kitchen and weekly deep cleaning.
  • Assist with inspecting the cleanliness of all dishes, silverware, or any other eating/serving utensils.
  • Oversee the sweeping and mopping of the dining hall on a daily basis.
  • Arrange proper seating facilities keeping in mind all rules and regulations concerning safety, fire, and health concerns.

  • Arrive on time for all scheduled activities and duties
  • Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required.
  • Observe curfew and/or quite hours each night.
  • Keep all relationships on a platonic, professional basis during camp hours and camp season.
  • Maintain a clean, professional, well-groomed appearance while on duty keeping in compliance with the Association and Camp Dress Code Policy at all times.
  • Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Assist Supervisor with implementation of camp crisis management plan and/or emergency management procedures as required.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of program participants at all times. Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries, maintain a safe environment, and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
  • Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Assist Supervisor with implementation of camp crisis management plan and/or emergency management procedures as required.
  • Appreciate and embrace diversity in all interactions with staff, campers, parents, volunteers and the public.
  • Interact with campers, staff, parents, families, and the general public in a professional manner at all times.
  • Aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Ensure complete confidentiality of sensitive information regarding campers and staff at all times.
  • Carry out assignments and other duties as directed by supervisor.

QUALIFACTIONS

  • Knowledge of and experience in institutional/quantity cooking and food service related to ordering, inventory, budgeting, food preparation, family-style serving, buffet serving, cleaning, and institutional kitchen equipment required.
  • Knowledge of and experience in preparation of special dietary foods.
  • Ability to work within a budget and purchase supplies efficiently.
  • Knowledge of current health and safety laws and practices related to food service.
  • Current Serve Safe Certification.
  • Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing/walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more).
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.
  • Valid drivers’ license, proof of insurance, and access to reliable transportation. Daily and/or occasional travel may be required to obtain supplies.
  • Ability to live on camp property for the duration of the camp employment period. Evenings and weekends are necessary. (Camp sessions run Sunday through Friday).
  • Ability to transport/move supplies and equipment, climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which will include evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.
  • Ability to work long hours, in an outdoor/indoor setting, requiring regular physical activity such as walk extensively on uneven terrains in all types of weather.

Camp Toosoo management is seeking qualified staff for our out of town summer camp team. Previous summer camp work experience and/or experience working with children are helpful. Positions pay a seasonal salary according to previous camp experience. Camps run mid-June to end-August 2018. You must be available for the entire season. Must be at least 18 years old to work at a day camp, and 19 years old to work at resident camp.

Duties & Responsibilities:

As a life Guard at Camp Toosoo  you will understand and support the mission of the organization an provide a safe and caring environment for everyone. As a lifeguard you will supervise swims on the camp beachfront for groups of campers several times a day for the duration of each five day camp session. Lifeguards are responsible for providing an exceptional camp experience for all campers while ensuring a safe and fun environment. is responsible for supervising all aspects of the waterfront activities. In addition, the lifeguard is responsible for assisting in the planning and leadership of base camp activities.

Position

As a life guard you will be reporting to the camp director.

  • Understand and support the mission of the organization
  • Professionally supervise daily camp swim activities

The director is responsible for the overall planning, organizing, and direction of the summer camps at Camp Toosoo. The contract for this position is from June 25 – August 31. Please see a more detailed description below.

Qualifications Required:

  • 21 years of age by commencement of camp program
  • Proven supervisory skills (minimum one summer)
  • Two year program planning and delivery experience
  • Experience with in town/out of town summer camp
  • Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
  • Criminal Reference Check and a Child Intervention Check
  • Leadership skills
  • Certifications in: canoeing, kayaking, climbing ropes courses, and/or wilderness  is an asset.
  • Creative skills in developing camping program is essential

Responsibilities:

The Summer Camp Director is responsible for the planning, coordinating and delivering all base camp programs under the direction of the Director. Additionally, the Summer Camp Director supervises Assistant Counsellors and Counsellors, providing them with guidance, mentorship and supervision.

Duties

  • Take primary responsibility for the health, well-being and happiness of all campers (12-15 yrs)
  • Supervision of all staff and volunteers and enforcing disciplinary measures if necessary
  • Assignment of campers and leaders to cabins with assistance of other staff;
  • Hold daily staff meetings;
  • Responsible for obtaining all necessary program supplies within budget guidelines;
  • Responsible for pre-camp orientation of staff (Documented training must be done)
  • Ensure the quality, continuity and flow of all summer camp programs
  • Ensure that campers are in the right place, at the right time doing the right activity.
  • Ensure campers are supervised at all times
  • Assist the Waterfront Specialist and Activity Specialist in the delivery of the programs
  • Responsible staff skill development through hands on training.
  • Participate in program delivery
  • Promote and maintain a safe and clean program environment
  • Train and motivate staff as part of a team plan set out by the Supervisor of Child and Youth

Human Resources:

  • Work in a team to supervise and provide mentorship for all Assistant Counsellors and Counsellors.
  • Be a member of the staff recruitment and selection team for summer camp positions when available
  • Spearhead the summer staff training.
  • Provide performance appraisals for staff: informally (verbally) once per month and formally (written) at the midpoint and end of each staff member’s term
  • Coach, mentor and discipline staff members, as required, with assistance from the Assistant Director and Director.
  • Primary point of contact for communication with parents/guardians
  • Observe camper behaviour, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency
  • Capture photos/videos of campers through each week to share on social media/marketing channels of the organization.
  • Solid understanding of and belief in mission-based camping

The Registered Nurse RN will be responsible for the day to day running of the health care needs, give first aid; give nursing care in cases of illness and accident, maintain first aid units throughout camp, review and maintain health records for campers.

The nurse will be responsible for the general health and safety of campers.

Establish and maintain contact with physician and with local hospital facilities; give first aid; give nursing care in cases of illness and accident as directed by physician; take responsibility for calling the physician when advisable.

Qualifications Required:

  • Licensed registered nurse is preferred.
  • Current certification in ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Prior experience in supervising staff
  • Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
  • Criminal Reference Check and a Child Intervention Check
  • Leadership skills

Duties

  • Understand and support the mission of the organization

  • Keeps a daily medical log and maintains and documents the camper/staff chart.
  • Dispenses and keeps a record of daily medications administered.
  • Keeps track of patients requiring follow-up visits for medical care.
  • Observes at all times all areas of camp to ensure optimum levels of health and safety for campers and staff.
  • Keep list of people who have allergy and what kind of allergy they have
  • Complete and follow up on incident reports;

We are looking for people who appreciate children, are passionate about nature and want to live and work in a community environment. Together we’ll serve close 140 youth/children and their family.

Camp Toosoo management is seeking qualified staff for our out of town summer camp team. Previous summer camp work experience and/or experience working with children are helpful. Positions pay a seasonal salary according to previous camp experience. Camps run mid-June to end-August 2018. You must be available for the entire season. Must be at least 18 years old to work at a day camp, and 19 years old to work at resident camp.

Responsibilities:

As a Cabin Counsellor at Camp Toosoo  you will understand and support the mission of the organization an provide a safe and caring environment for everyone. Cabin Counsellors are always with their cabin group.  Counsellors eat meals with their respective cabin group, supervise scheduled activities, and see their campers safely to bed. A typical day could include any or all of the following responsibilities:

Round up and Lights out (@10Pm)

  • Assist Camp Director in getting campers to their cabins.
  • Helping campers wash up and brush their teeth
  • Seeing that campers are in pajamas and have settled down with lights out.
  • Cabin counsellor will complete the head count and everyone goes to bed. The counsellor stay in the cabin to make sure everyone stay in their cabin and sleeps.
  • The camp director will visit the each cabin and collect the head count to make sure everyone is in their cabin. No coming out of cabin or walking around will be tolerated.
  • Checking in often with your cabin group

Waking up

  • Getting your campers to the prayer room/dining hall

Dining:

  • On duty during the meal, supervising your cabin group.
  • Organizing the table and making sure everyone gets fed
  • Manage table clean-up
  • Ensuring attentive campers during announcements.
  • Making sure campers are polite and respectful to kitchen staff and each other.
  • Stays with them until this activity is completed.

Clean Up

  • Instructing your campers on how to keep a tidy home
  • Model cleanliness in maintaining your own area.

Activities:

  • Getting your campers to their activities on time and in appropriate gear.
  • Ensure everyone participates and has fun.
  • Make sure kids respect the staff and maintain safety standards.
  • Remain on duty during this camper’s choice activity period.
  • Assist with programming while maintaining supervision of your campers

Evening Programming

  • Assisting with preparation, planning and stocking supplies
  • Helping keep kids quiet & engaged
  • You may volunteer or be asked to run evening programs throughout the summer – it’s a chance to express your creativity and originality. Planning and timely follow-through are essential.

The nurse will be responsible for the general health and safety of campers.

Establish and maintain contact with physician and with local hospital facilities; give first aid; give nursing care in cases of illness and accident as directed by physician; take responsibility for calling the physician when advisable.

  • Monitor little chef’s performance and training.
  • Oversee kitchen operations and kitchen staff (Assigned Campers) daily.
  • Help create campers kitchen calendar (who is responsible for what day)
  • With the help of assigned campers oversee and lead the planning, preparation, service and cleanup of 3 meals each day.
  • Observe all safety precautions and comply with all health and safety rules
  • Supervise the camper cooks at all time (They should not be left alone in the kitchen).
  • Ensure with the help of assigned campers meals are cooked and available for the campers on time
  • Promote and maintain a safe and clean program environment
  • Ensure all activities are safe

The director is responsible for the overall planning, organizing, and direction of the summer camps at Camp Toosoo. The contract for this position is from June 25 – August 31. Please see a more detailed description below.

Qualifications Required:

  • 21 years of age by commencement of camp program
  • Proven supervisory skills (minimum one summer)
  • Two year program planning and delivery experience
  • Experience with in town/out of town summer camp
  • Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
  • Criminal Reference Check and a Child Intervention Check
  • Leadership skills
  • Certifications in: canoeing, kayaking, climbing ropes courses, and/or wilderness  is an asset.
  • Creative skills in developing camping program is essential

Responsibilities:

The Summer Camp Director is responsible for the planning, coordinating and delivering all base camp programs under the direction of the Director. Additionally, the Summer Camp Director supervises Assistant Counsellors and Counsellors, providing them with guidance, mentorship and supervision.

 

Duties

  • Take primary responsibility for the health, well-being and happiness of all campers (12-15 yrs)
  • Supervision of all staff and volunteers and enforcing disciplinary measures if necessary
  • Assignment of campers and leaders to cabins with assistance of other staff;
  • Hold daily staff meetings;
  • Responsible for obtaining all necessary program supplies within budget guidelines;
  • Responsible for pre-camp orientation of staff (Documented training must be done)
  • Ensure the quality, continuity and flow of all summer camp programs
  • Ensure that campers are in the right place, at the right time doing the right activity.
  • Ensure campers are supervised at all times
  • Assist the Waterfront Specialist and Activity Specialist in the delivery of the programs
  • Responsible staff skill development through hands on training.
  • Participate in program delivery
  • Promote and maintain a safe and clean program environment
  • Train and motivate staff as part of a team plan set out by the Supervisor of Child and Youth

Human Resources:

  • Work in a team to supervise and provide mentorship for all Assistant Counsellors and Counsellors.
  • Be a member of the staff recruitment and selection team for summer camp positions when available
  • Spearhead the summer staff training.
  • Provide performance appraisals for staff: informally (verbally) once per month and formally (written) at the midpoint and end of each staff member’s term
  • Coach, mentor and discipline staff members, as required, with assistance from the Assistant Director and Director.
  • Primary point of contact for communication with parents/guardians
  • Observe camper behaviour, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency
  • Capture photos/videos of campers through each week to share on social media/marketing channels of the organization.
  • Solid understanding of and belief in mission-based camping
